Has a great variety of common names depending on the area. Producing a rosette of leaves in its first year up to 50cm long, the second year, it can reach 1-2m in height. A biennial requiring winter dormancy before it can flower., with any given flower only opening before dawn and closing in the afternoon. They will also self-pollinate if not visited by insects. Roman soldiers are said to have dipped the plant stalks in grease for use as torches.
With a recent resurgence in popularity, Mullein is historically known for its healing and restorative properties, mainly when prepared as a tea for lung problems or as an oil for various skin conditions. All teas need to be finely filtered to eliminate the irritating hairs.
