Lycopersicon esculentum
Originated from the Andes and cultivated in Central America, introduced in 1925
Does well in light to heavy soils with good drainage and high organic and phosphorus. Sensitive to frosts, matures early and suits temperate climates. Sow anytime in frost free areas, can sow indoors 5 weeks before transplanting in cooler areas or after last frost. Water in furrows rather than overhead to reduce disease, declines if waterlogged. Vigorous climber best staked. Disease resistant. Suppresses couch grass. An old favourite, can be used fresh in salads and sandwiches, or cooked in soups, preserves, and stir fry dishes.
General note:
Do not be too hasty to discard seed that does not germinate, seeds will often lay dormant until the conditions are like their natural requirements for germination to occur. Containers put to one side will often surprise long after they were discarded.
