A fast-growing, deciduous tree to 22m high with a 12m canopy, and a lifespan of approx. 120 years. Hairless, green, lobed leaves turn bronze to red in autumn. In mature trees over 40 years of age, the upper branches point upwards, the middle branches are at right angles to the trunk, and the lower branches droop downwards, creating an easily distinguishable canopy. Native to America, it is well adapted to Australian and is now widespread.
It doesn’t mind clay soils, poor drainage, or being excessively wet, but they don’t like lime, or standing in water long-term. Interspecies hybridization occurs freely and acorns take two growing seasons to develop. The acorns are bitter and unpalatable but pretty to look at. These grow into great specimens for avenues, streets, and lawn plantings. According to PFAF (2021), the seeds have edible and therapeutic uses. AVERAGE GERMINATION RATE IS CONSIDERED TO BE ABOUT 68%, and they do not like being transplanted at all.
