Slender stemmed, erect, evergreen tree to 8m with a spread of 3m. Has dark brown scaly bark, white blossoms and yellow fruit. A native of Central America, it has become naturalised in tropical Australia and is adaptable to most well-drained soils but does not like extended dryness or frost.
Guavas are notable for an extremely slow growth rate for several months, before a very rapid acceleration in growth rate takes over. Quick to harvest. Flowers will usually self-pollinate and produce fruits within a few months. May have more than one fruiting and flowering season during the year, depending on local climate conditions. With shallow roots, these prefer lots of moisture throughout the year (except if cold), although they will tolerate periods of drought, and dry seasonal changes. Keep the soil especially moist while flowering and fruiting. Will accept poor soils but grows much better when grown in soil that is high in organic material or when fertilized monthly. Does NOT like salty soils.
Fruit is sweet and can be eaten fresh but are often used to flavour desserts, sauces, drinks, preserves, and many other food products.

General note:
Do not be too hasty to discard seed that does not germinate, seeds will often lay dormant until the conditions are similar to their natural requirements for germination to occur. Containers put to one side will often surprise long after they were discarded.
