Podocarpus Elatus 'Illawarra Plum'-EDIBLES-25 seeds
Ideal sowing temp: 20-24C.
Position: Open & sunny once matured.
Preparation: Soak seed in water for 2 days changing water daily.
Sowing: Sow seed depth of the seed size. Warm, shaded or semi-shaded position while sprouting.
Care: Water with fine mist spray to avoid disturbance of the seed. (Applying bottom heat when germinating although not critical can increase speed of germination).
Sprouting: 30-90 days.
Also known as the Daalgaal, Goongum or Plum Pine, this Australian rain-forest tree can get to 40m. Native to eastern New South Wales and eastern Queensland, it has survived since the dinosaur age. The timber is prized for furniture making, joinery and boat planking. Prefers a rich, moist non-alkaline soil. Resistant to salt spray, it grows best in areas with a humid climate and tolerates temperatures down to -7°c.
Large and attractive with dark green glossy leaves and edible purple fruits. These sweet and juicy fruits have a high vitamin C content and can be used in sweet and savoury recipes, having a subtle plum flavour.
