Persoonia Linearis 'Narrow-Leaved Geebung'-BUSH TUCKA-5 seeds
Ideal sowing temp: 18-22C
Position: Full sun.
Preparation: Soak in boiling water 10-15 hours before sowing or scarify or use smoke treatment to encourage the seed to open the embryo.
Sowing: 7mm deep. Cover very lightly with soil. Warm position while sprouting. Keep the seed tray in a sunny position during the following summer and the seed should germinate in the autumn.
Care: Water with fine mist spray to avoid disturbance of the seed.
Sprouting: possibly 9-12 months or more. Carefully prick the young seedlings out into individual pots within 1-2 days of emerging. The roots and stem are known to be extremely delicate.
Maturing: Grow the plants in a greenhouse for at least their first 2 winters before planting them out into their permanent positions in early summer. Offer some protection for at least their first winter outdoors.
Common evergreen, understorey shrub to 5m with dark, flaky, papery bark. Said to be difficult to grow from seed or cutting so these may not be for the novice and less than 50% germination is normal for seeds! Prefers loamy, sandy, well-drained soil and a sunny position. Will tolerate cold but doesn’t like drought.
Persoonia fruits are easily identified by the stalk protruding from the underside of the fruit. The skin and seed are usually discarded, and the fruits are not ripe until they have fallen from the tree to the ground. They can have an astringent taste and may be eaten cooked or raw.
