The Prickly Paperbark is a tall upright shrub or tree with papery white or light brown bark that peels off in large strips.  The leaves are alternate and ovate, growing to 7mm to 15mm long and 3mm to 6mm wide.  There are 15-30 veins along the length of the leaves which have pointed tips.  Flowers are produced in 2cm long bottlebrush-shaped flower spikes in spring and summer.  The flowers are usually in groups of three.  Petals are almost circular and about 1mm to 2mm long.  The ovoid fruits are grey-brown, woody capsules and about 2mm to 3mm in diameter.

The thick soft bark was used for roofing, blankets, rain capes, bandages, plates, caulking for canoes, rafts to take material across rivers, slings to carry babies, and padded rings to carry loads on heads.  Leaves can be crushed and sniffed for colds and headaches.  An infusion of the leaves was used as a wash for skin irritations.

To grow: Germination of the seed of Melaleuca species is usually quite easy by normal seed raising methods. No special pretreatment is needed. Germination should occur in 14 to 30 days, depending on the species. A common method used for germination of Melaleuca and related plants is the "bog method" where the pot containing the seeds is placed into a saucer of water until germination occurs. This results in moisture reaching the seeds by capillary action and ensures that the seeds do not dry out.
