Originally from Central America, these gourds grow on a vine and are commonly used for making your own loofahs or sponges!
To make your own sponge: grow the seeds and leave the fruits to grow and dry out. When dry, cut off the end and shake out seeds. Peel off the skin and inside will be perfectly formed, natural loofahs. They can last for a long time if left dry or, if you use them, they last for several months.
Use in stir fry dishes when picked young, and young shoots, leaves and flower buds are edible too.

Do not be too hasty to discard seed that does not germinate, seeds will often lay dormant until the conditions are similar to their natural requirements for germination to occur. Containers put to one side will often surprise long after they were discarded.
