Ficus Religiosa-'Sacred Fig'-TREE-50 seeds
Ideal sowing temp: 20-25C.
Position: Full sun, well-drained.
Sowing: 1mm deep in sandy, well-drained compost. Cover very lightly with sand or grit. Warm, shaded or semi-shaded position while sprouting.
Care: Keep between 20-25C. Water with fine mist spray to avoid disturbance of the seed.
Sprouting: 28-42 days or sometimes much more.

Splendid tree with heart shaped leaves. Self-pollinating so only one plant is required. The sacred fig is a large strangler fig to 30m with extensive aerial roots so is often grown in pots to contain the root system and keep it small. If growing out in a yard or garden, be sure to leave a huge space for it to grow, perhaps even an area about 30m around! The mature trees are huge with smooth and very interesting, twisted trunks. Thrives in hot, humid climates, prefers temps above 5C. Can also easily be grown as an attractive pot plant or bonsai.
Siddhartha sat beneath this tree in Bodgaya while he attained enlightenment and became Buddha. Used widely in Buddhist Temples and Ashrams around the world, it is considered sacred by followers of Hinduism, and Buddhism. This tree is all about enlightenment, wisdom and the peaceful road of life and is seen as a place to meditate.
The tree is also important in Ayurvedic healing with the leaves, seeds, bark, roots, fruit, and sap all having a use.
