Entire plant is edible. The roosts and shoots have a peppery taste. The root of the first-year plant is edible roasted but if raw, will irritate the throat. Young seed pods can also be steamed, and young shoots may be steamed or boiled also. Older leaves can be tough and not so desirable. Young small leaves, roasted seeds, and the sweet flowers can be added to salads and used as a garnish.
