EUCALYPTUS SIDEROXYLON

“Red Ironbark” 

Family: Myrtaceae 

Ideal sowing temp: 18-22C 

Position:  Light Shade to Full Sun; Well Drained. 

Preparation: Soak in boiling water 10-15 hours before sowing or scarify. 

Sowing: Sow seed on surface of a porous seed raising mix. Sprinkle with a very light covering of the seed raising mix, do not bury deeply. 

Care:  Place in a warm shaded or semi shaded position. Keep moist but not wet. 

Sprouting: 10-28 days. 

Commonly known as mugga ironbark, or red ironbark. A small to medium-sized tree to 35m. It is widespread and often plentiful in woodland from south-eastern Queensland through New South Wales to Victoria. The subspecies improcera is only known from the Barakula State Forest north-northwest of Chinchilla.  

It has dark, deeply furrowed ironbark that is dark grey to black, deeply furrowed on the trunk and larger branches, smooth white to grey on the thinnest branches.  With lance-shaped adult leaves, flower buds in groups of seven, it also has white, red, pink or creamy yellow flowers and cup-shaped fruit. They are easy to grow from seed and are usually quite true to the parent in form. They are very hardy, and extremely drought tolerant. 

. Very dense, hard, fine grained timber, difficult to work, but polishes to a high sheen. Has been used for furniture, turnery, boat-building, benchtops. At about 1130 kg/m3 it is one of the few timbers that will not float.  The wood is often used for firewood as it is fairly hard and dense. It has very high resistance to rotting making it useful for making fence posts, piers, and sleepers

The leaves are used in the production of c1neole-based eucalyptus oil.

General note: Many native seeds are dormant and require specific conditions or pre-treatment for germination. Consider keeping seed that does not sprout as native seeds will often lay dormant until the conditions are similar to their natural conditions for germination to occur. Containers of native seeds put to one side will often surprise long after they were thrown away.
