Dracaena Draco (Dragon Tree)-TREE-Buy In Bulk-Seeds
Ideal soil temp for sowing: 20-25C
Position: Full Sun; Well Drained.
Preparation: Choose a soilless medium such as sand or peat moss and moisten it thoroughly. Dry soil until barely moist and fill up a pot.
Sowing: Lay the seed on the surface of the sand and just barely cover it with sand
Care: Use a heat mat to provide bottom heat to the pot. Mist pot often with water. Set the mat’s thermostat to between 25-20C, place in the sun and then place the pot on top. As soon as the seed sprouts, (8 weeks or substantially longer), begin gradually lowering the heat mat’s temperature, over the course of a week, until it is turned off.
Sprouting: 48-120 days or more.
At about 10–15 years of age the single stem of Draceana Draco stops growing and produces a flower spike with white, lily-like perfumed flowers, followed by coral berries. This is followed by a crown of terminal buds and the plant then starts branching. Each branch grows for around 10–15 years and re-branches, so a mature plant has an umbrella-like habit. It grows slowly, requiring about ten years to reach 1.2 m high but it can grow much faster too. When the bark or leaves are cut they secrete a reddish resin, one of several sources of substances known as dragon's blood. The resin, the so-called 'dragon's blood', is used as a therapeutic and fumigating agent.
The Chakra Garden cannot take any responsibility for any adverse effects from the use of plants.
Always seek advice from a professional before eating or using a plant therapeutically.
Being a monocotyledon, it does not display any annual or growth rings so the age of the tree can only be estimated by the number of branching points before reaching the canopy.
Can be grown in gardens, parks, and is great for water-conserving sustainable-landscape projects.
