Erect shrub to 3 metres high. Cultivated as an ornamental plant for use in gardens and as a potted plant. Capsules were used as a hop substitute by early settlers.
Attractive colours make this ideal for any garden or as an informal hedge or screening shrub to 3 metres. It has narrow green leaves and yellow-green flowers in clusters in spring, followed by claret coloured fruits in summer. Drought and frost resistant.
Do not be too hasty to discard seed that does not germinate, seeds will often lay dormant until the conditions are like their natural requirements for germination to occur. Containers put to one side will often surprise long after they were discarded.
