“Beach Flax Lily”
Ideal sowing temp: 18-25C
Position: Light Shade to Full Sun; Well Drained.
Preparation: Pre-soak for 24 hours in luke-warm water
Sowing: 3mm deep.
Care: Keep moist but not wet.
Sprouting: 30-90 days.
Dianella Congesta is hermaphrodite (has both male and female organs). An evergreen perennial growing to 1m, it is in leaf all year, in flower from November to February. Not very cold-tolerant, but can survive in sheltered environments in dappled shade, such as a woodland, if temperatures do not drop too far below zero for long periods. Some suggest growing these in a greenhouse for the first 2 years before gently planting out in Spring.
Edible Uses: **please note: while the berries of the mature plants are considered to be edible, Dianella sp. is also listed as toxic in Queensland. Be sure to seek professional advice before consuming any berries.
'Fruit - raw or cooked. The best tasting of the genus. The fruit is up to 1.5cm in diameter.
