Cotinus Coggyria "Smoke Bush" Seeds
Sowing temp: late Spring-early Summer after frosts have ended.
Position: Full Sun; Well Drained.
Preparation: Soak in boiling water 12 hours before sowing.
Sowing: 3mm deep. Cover very lightly with soil.
Care: Store in a constant temp of 15C for 90 days. Keep soil moist but not wet. Move the tray into a cooler area with a constant temp of 5C for a further 90-150 days. Keep moist. Once established, decrease watering to prevent root rot.
Sprouting: 6-25 days.
Cotinus coggyria, syn. Rhus cotinus, Known as European Smoketree, Eurasian Smoketree, Smoke Tree, Smoke Bush, Venetian Sumach, or Dyer's Sumach. Native to southern Europe, across central Asia and the Himalayas to northern China. The autumn colour can be stunningly varied, from yellow and peach, to scarlet. The flowers have a wispy 'smoke-like' appearance. It is usually grown as an ornamental plant, with several cultivars available.
The wood has been used to make a yellow dye called ‘young fustic’.
