Callistemon viminalis is probably one of the best known and most widely cultivated of all bottlebrushes. A small tree with pendulous foliage although some forms are more pendulous than others. It reaches a height of about 10 metres in its natural habitat but is usually smaller in cultivation, particularly in temperate areas where it is an attractive and reliable small tree for street planting.
Usually found along watercourses, it grows best if a reliable water supply is available however, once established, it is able to tolerate extended dry periods too. While it does best in medium to heavy soils, it can tolerate less than perfect drainage but may be damaged by moderate to heavy frost.
Propagation of viminalis is easy from both seed and cuttings.
*** note *** Callistemon are known to hybridise so easily that when growing from seed, you may get species you don't expect to get, no matter how particular you are with the seeds! Information adapted from anpsa 7 May 2018 2001 AEST
