“Queensland Silver Wattle”
Ideal sowing temp: 25-30C.
Position: Open & sunny in sandy loam.
Preparation: Scarify and then soak in warm water 12-15 hours before sowing.
Sowing: 2mm deep. Warm, shaded or semi-shaded position while sprouting.
Care: Water with fine mist spray to avoid disturbance of the seed.
Sprouting: 21-40 days.
Also known as Pearl Wattle. A tall shrub or small perennial tree to 6m that flowers in spring with bright golden blooms emerging from the silver-grey to grey-green coloured foliage. Although endemic to south eastern Queensland and North-eastern NSW, it is also naturalising in areas further south as well as Western Australia and South Australia. Has both male and female organs and fixes nitrogen. Makes a great hedging plant. Cold-hardy down to 7C.
The delicately sweet-perfumed flowers are considered ed1ble when cooked. Rich in pollen, they are often used to make fritters.
