Alloxylon Flammeum 'Tree Waratah'-TREE SEEDS-10 seeds
Ideal sowing temp: 20-25C
Position: Open & sunny once matured.
Preparation: Soak in hot water 24-48 hours before sowing.
Sowing: 10mm deep. Cover very lightly with soil. Coir or sowing mix + sand or perlite. Warm, shaded or semi-shaded position while sprouting.
Care: Bright spot 20-23C. Keep constantly slightly moist but not wet.
Sprouting: 10-28 days.
Formerly known as Oreocallis wickhamii, other common names include Northern Tree Waratah, Queensland waratah, Queensland Tree Waratah, and Red Silky Oak.
Evergreen Australian native tree to 15m high with a canopy of around 5m. Prefers a slightly acidic soil in a well-drained site with full sun. Also prefers fert1lisers that are low in ph0sp0r0us. According to Wikipedia (Feb 2021) it is listed as vulnerable under the Australian Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act) as most of its habitat has been cleared for agriculture and logging.
In spring, bright orange-red flowers with yellow pollen appear resembling the much-loved Waratah. Said to be the most hardy of the alloxylon species, plants grown from seed may take 7-8 years to flower. Mainly found in QLD rain-forests, it is also drought-tolerant.
