Native to Japan and Western Asia, original habitats of the tree include regions from Iran (Persia) and the Republic of Azerbaijan to China and Korea. Grows to a small, deciduous tree to 16m with a stout stem and a horizontal canopy of spreading branches covered in showy pink flowers that resemble pompoms. The flowers are fragrant while the leaves are feathery looking and close at night. Popular Bonsai specimen.
Prefers a well-drained soil in an open sunny position but will accept partial shade. Tolerates a wide range of soils. It is drought, wind and frost tolerant, fast growing and can thrive in full sun in hot, summer climates, although can be stunted and sickly-looking during drought.
Used as an herb in its native south-western and eastern Asia, the flowers and stem bark are used to make medicine. Albizia is taken by mouth for anxiety, cancer, depression, sleep problems (insomnia), and sore throat; to improve mood; and to reduce swelling associated with trauma.
