Ideal sowing temp: 18-22C
Position: Warm shaded or semi shaded.
Sowing: Sprinkle on top of a porous seed raising mix and cover very lightly if required to hold the seed in place. Do not bury seed deeply. Keep damp but well-drained and not wet to avoid rotting. Do not let soil dry out completely.
Sprouting: 10-28 days.
A small tree up to 15 metres. With its’ fibrous brown bark, long, narrow dull-green leaves, and clusters of small white flowers, it grows in a weeping habit, and looks remarkably like weeping willow from a distance. Easily identified by the powerful aroma of peppermint when the leaves are crushed or torn. It flowers between August and December.
Quick growing, its trunk sometimes becomes large and disproportionate to the rest of the tree. It produces a large amount of detritus and the leaf litter can suppress any other species planted underneath.
Flexuosa and var. Nana respond well to pruning and is often pruned back to its main trunk to promote new growth and to keep a tidy and dense canopy. Without pruning, the canopy can become thin. The species, in some circumstances - such as when grown on rocky, terraced terrain - can grow buttress roots, but seldom does in flat, sandy areas. Flexuosa trees can also have a twist or spiral effect in the bark of their main trunks that increases with age, usually evident in seedlings.
