Hardy, prostrate ground covering vine to 2m with pea-shaped red and yellow flowers occurring over the cooler months from April to November.
Prefers a dry, light-medium soil in an open sunny position. Drought and frost resistant.
Scarlet pea-type flowers can be sucked to obtain sweet nectar. Flowers can also be used as a salad garnish or they be added to water where they’ll release a delicious nectar. The leaves can be steeped in hot water to create a liquorice-flavoured tea.
Vigorous flowering plant endemic to Victoria and New South Wales and Queensland.
It is a vigorous climber with stems up to 4m in length and oval-shaped leaflets in threes up to12 cm long. Dark red pea flowers occur from late winter to spring and are followed by hairy pods to 10cm.
It is killed by bushfire and regenerates from seed dormant in the soil.
Can be used to cover embankments or structures and adapts to a range of well-drained soils and positions with sun or partial shade. Resistant to drought and has some frost tolerance.
