Family: Scrophulariaceae 

Ideal sowing temp: 18-22C (Avoid the coldest and hottest temps). 

Position:  Open & sunny once matured. 

Preparation: Very carefully split the fruits in half and then quarters to extract the seed.  Sm0ke application may help. 

Sowing: On surface of porous mix.  Warm, shaded or semi-shaded position while sprouting. 

Care:  Water with fine mist spray to avoid disturbance of the seed. 

Sprouting: 21-120 days (and possibly longer). Can be difficult to germinate! 

Other names: berregan emu bush, long-leaved emu bush, weeping emu bush, amuna, tulypurpa, otenerreng, ortherrenge, tulypur, ngawil, native plum, juniper tree, dogwood. 

A weeping, flowering plant in the ‘figwort’ family, endemic to Australia in all states except NT, to 6m H x 4m W.  With red flower-tubes, it has oval shaped fruits which start out yellow before turning brown and then black.  Drought and frost resistant, it tends to put down suckers, making it a useful possibility as a hedging plant or screening plant.  This trait makes it suitable for use as a windbreak and also useful for controlling soil erosion.

Honey-eaters, bustards, and emus are known to use it as a food source.  It is also used as a feed for stock in rural areas. 

May be used as an Australian native alternative to Salvia Apiana for ‘smudging’.  According to Richmond, G.S. It also had therapeutic uses such as to treat colds and headaches and was used to cleanse and strengthen new-born babies”.
