Pre-treatment of smoke is recommended for this species.
Many seeds of this genus are responsive to pre-treatment of smoke. Smoke treatment has proved useful in reducing the number of days to germination and in increasing germination rates of this species, although they may germinate without it too. Smoke treatments are simple and can be undertaken either by soaking the seed overnight or by applying to the surface after sowing, both provide good results. Treatments can range form ‘smoking’ your own by enveloping the seeds in clouds of smoke over hot coals, to commercial smoke packets and you can find these at gardening stores around the nation.
