“Mat Rush”

Family: Asparagaceae.

Ideal sowing temp: 20-30C.

Position:  Open & sunny once matured.

Preparation: Soak in hot (not boiling) water for 24 hours before sowing.

Sowing: Scatter over firmly packed potting mix in a standard seed tray.  Cover with a thin layer of vermiculite.

Care:  Keep moist but not too wet. Warm, shaded or semi-shaded position while sprouting.  Protect trays from m1ce.

Sprouting: 28-45 days.

A rush-like plant that grows in a tussock style to 1m high and 60cm wide.  The strappy, green leaves are long, narrow, tough and flexible with flat or slightly rolled-in edges.  Fragrant male and female flowers are tiny and cream-coloured, on separate plants.  Used a lot in Australia, New Zealand, Spain and USA for roadside plantings due to it’s high drought tolerance and low maintenance care.

The leaves contain a tough fibre that can be made into string while the flexible but tough leaves are great for weaving and basket-making.

Parts of the plant are also considered edible.  The flowers and leaf-bases may be eaten raw and are said to have a flavour similar to green peas.  Male and female flowers are edible although the male flowers are easier to harvest.

The Chakra Garden cannot take any responsibility for any adverse effects from the use of plants.

Always seek advice from a professional before eating or using a plant therapeutically.

Seeds don't grow

I purchased 4 packets of seeds. I tried one, followed instructions and none of the 25 seeds grew.

I will try another packet in a few weeks and see if results are any different

Thank you so much for taking the time to leave feedback about your seeds. While we take great care picking, cleaning, storing, packaging, and sending our seeds out into the world, the actual growing of each seed has many many variables that are completely out of our control. While we always hope the seeds we supply will grow really well, we cannot guarantee it and we do care – a lot. We have sent you a private email and hope to hear from you soon. Thanks again.
