A rush-like plant that grows in a tussock style to 1m high and 60cm wide. The strappy, green leaves are long, narrow, tough and flexible with flat or slightly rolled-in edges. Fragrant male and female flowers are tiny and cream-coloured, on separate plants. Used a lot in Australia, New Zealand, Spain and USA for roadside plantings due to it’s high drought tolerance and low maintenance care.
The leaves contain a tough fibre that can be made into string while the flexible but tough leaves are great for weaving and basket-making.
Parts of the plant are also considered edible. The flowers and leaf-bases may be eaten raw and are said to have a flavour similar to green peas. Male and female flowers are edible although the male flowers are easier to harvest.
