Citrullus lanatus 

Originally from Africa and popular as a home-garden and market variety since 1955. Round, dark green fruit to 20cm round and 3-5kg in weight with thin tough skin, and very sweet bright red flesh. Very early, suited to cooler climates, drought resistant. 

Keep well watered. Fruit is ripe when the stem starts to brown off. Sow after last frost or, indoors 5 weeks before transplanting. Save seed from ripe fruit as you eat.

General note: 
Do not be too hasty to discard seed that does not germinate, seeds will often lay dormant until the conditions are similar to their natural requirements for germination to occur. Containers put to one side will often surprise long after they were discarded.
