Ideal sowing temp: 20-25C

Position:  Sunny; moist, well-drained soil.

Sowing: 1mm deep; 30cm apart.

Sprouting: 15-30 days (at 18-21C).

Flowering: 75-85 days.

Chakra: Solar Plexus.

Oenothera biennis

Biennial to 120cm with fragrant yellow, lemon-scented flowers that open in the evenings. (The seeds have been known to remain viable in the soil for at least 70 years!).  Has many therapeutic and herbal uses.  Entire plant is edible.  The roosts and shoots have a peppery taste. The root of the first-year plant is edible roasted but if raw, will irritate the throat. Young seed pods can also be steamed, and young shoots may be steamed or boiled also.  Older leaves can be tough and not so desirable.  Young small leaves, roasted seeds, and the sweet flowers can be added to salads and used as a garnish.

Do not be too hasty to discard seed that does not germinate, seeds will often lay dormant until the conditions are similar to their natural requirements for germination to occur. Containers put to one side will often surprise long after they were discarded.
