A gourmet Western Mediterranean vegetable in ancient times with attractive grey-green foliage. Artichokes are perennials, usually living 5 years and growing to 1.5m.

Sowing time: Spring and Summer.

Climate: Suited to warm climates

Position: Prefers sunny position.

Sowing: 20mm.

Sprouting: Emerge 10-14 days.

Harvest: Harvest in the second year. Cut plant and mulch after harvest. Cut buds when heads are tight and flat 5cm below bud, late first summer, boil until tender.

Do not be too hasty to discard seed that does not germinate, seeds will often lay dormant until the conditions are similar to their natural requirements for germination to occur. Containers put to one side will often surprise long after they were discarded.
